Money saving ideas?

Okay, we are trying to get out of debt. The fastest way to do it would be to sell the house. No, really. We had built enough equity in the house that we can at least pay of the credit card bills.

The debt we built up came from a few years ago, when the stove died, the dryer quit drying and the clothes washer quit washing. And then last year the 8-year-old truck need just enough repairs that it didn't justify buying a new one, and yet it set us back a few thousand.

Then there was our trip this year. We were supposed to go to the cabin and just clean out the bugs that accumulated over the course of two years as well as repair the plumbing that was destroyed in an unexpected deep freeze. Instead we found that the rodents that had taken resident in the attic over the winter had chewed through the ceiling causing a few hundred dollars in repair as well as a few thousand dollars in a generator and tools that we didn't have, before the rodents made even more expensive damage.

If we knew that had happened we would have brought our own generator and tools from home, but we didn't. Instead we were faced with a choice. Not spend the money and have to practically rebuild the cabin, or spend the money now and save the money that would have gone into rebuilding the cabin, as opposed to just replacing the ceiling, which couldn't have been done without electricity (which the cabin didn't have).

We gave the keys to my husband's friend to keep guard of our newly purchased generator. I doubt anyone would actually try to steal it. After all, it's wayyyy in the boonies. You can't even see it with Google earth.

But what if we don't sell the house?

Time to brainstorm...
